About Montessori

The main purpose of a Montessori school is to provide a carefully planned environment which will help children develop from within themselves and excellent foundation for creative learning.

Dr. Maria Montessori is the founder of what is known as the “Montessori Method” throughout the world today. She was the first woman physician to graduate from the University of Rome in 1896. She became involved with education treating children labeled as retarded. In 1907 she opened a childcare center for families in the San Lorenzo slums of Rome. She called it “ A Children’s House” and based the program on her observation that children work best in a homelike setting filled with developmentally appropriate materials.

Dr. Maria Montessori believed that no human being is educated by another person. He/She must do it himself/herself or it will never be done. A truly educated individual continues learning long after the hours and years he/she spends in the classroom because he/she is motivated from within. By a natural curiosity and as a lover for knowledge, Dr. Montessori felt, that the goal of early childhood education should not be to fill the child with facts from a pre-selected course of studies, but rather to cultivate the child’s own natural desire to learn.
